Financial Government Support:
When experiencing unplanned pregnancy many young women will wonder how they will survive financially once their baby is here. Below is some broad information taken from the Australian Government Website, Centrelink, regarding your financial status as a parent:
While there is no specific payment for when you are pregnant, you can contact centrelink to see if there are other payments and services which may help you during your pregnancy.
Once you have your baby, you will receive what is called a ‘Parent Pack’ at the hospital, which will include a claim form for payments you may be entitled to after you have had your baby. The Parent Pack is a resource kit developed by the Australian Government for you as a new parent. It provides you with information about the family financial assistance that may be available to you. The birth of your child is a challenging and exciting time in your life, with so much to do and learn. The purpose of the pack is to relieve some of the stress of having a new baby by providing you with important information all in one place.
Government payments which may be available to you after the birth of your child include:
- Baby bonus: You can be paid $5,185 per eligible child in 13 fortnightly instalments, rates effective from 20 September 2009
- Family Tax Benefit Part A: You can be paid a maximum of $156.94 per fortnight per child
- Family Tax Benefit Part B: You can be paid a maximum of $133.56 per fortnight per child
If you decide to study the government payments which may be available to you are:
- If you are single with children : $486.60 per fortnight
- If you are partnered with children : $407.80 per fortnight
The Youth Allowance payment rates for 2009 listed below are a guide only. Income and assets tests will be used to work out how much you can get. If you are not independent, the parental means test will also usually apply.
You may also be eligible for child care rebate and maternity immunisation allowance, please visit www.centrelink.gov.au or phone 136150 for more information.
