Week 4
Your baby is a ball of cells at week four, called an embryo; the embryo grows inside your uterus and is the size of an orange pip. Even though it is tiny, it's divided into three layers that will later form organs and tissues. Low on the sides of the head is two folds of tissue that will become the ears. The beginnings of the brain, backbone and spinal cord are all forming. Specialist cells also begin growing now; these cells are what will become skin, hair and nails. The heart and the circulatory system begin to develop in the middle layer. The third layer starts to grow the lungs, intestines, and the start of the urinary system. Even now your babies’ placenta and umbilical cord are already working and growing, they deliver nourishment and oxygen to your baby.
